OSCA Nairobi Community: Creating and Maintaining Open Source Projects

A big hurdle that mobile developers have to contend with is developing an app when the backend is not yet ready. Often developers resort to using sample objects and then have to rewrite their code again once the api is set up. But what if we started consuming the api immediately without waiting for the backend to be set up? This is where mocking servers comes in.
In this session we will dive into the details of mocking servers and how it can be leveraged to accelerate development of mobile applications. In addition we will also look into the OpenApi spec formerly known as Swagger which helps us document rest apis in a manner that allows both the generation of the mock server as well as outlining the structure of the api. The OpenApi document can then be used by the backend developers to create an api compliant with the document. Additionally, we will also go through how to mock servers without an OpenApi document for even faster prototyping. By the end of this session, you'll have a solid understanding of how OpenAPI can help you document your APIs and how mock servers can serve as an essential tool for speeding up development and reducing the time-to-market for your products.

Unlocking Cloud Potential with the AWS Kotlin SDK: Simplified Integration and Enhanced Productivity

Palm rejection is a niche topic. It involves ignoring touch input from the hand when drawing on screen using a stylus. Some devices with a stylus come with palm rejection support out of the box but most do not. On the official documentation, the palm rejection support is only offered on newer APIs (Android 13 and higher), which leaves the people using lower levels stuck with bad UX. In this talk, I will cover:

ObjextBox is a lightweight alternative to persisting data in Android applications. With helpful packs such pre-defined APIs to run queries and build relationships, in a matter of seconds, one can build a database and run data operations seamlessly.

Objectbox is relatively simple to setup as compared to popular data persistence tools such as Room. Mimicking a plug-in kind of library, a dependency in the gradle file and a few annotations in code gets the job done. 
The official documentation is always updated to reflect new changes in using its APIs. 
Moreover, ObjectBox supports a wide-range of frameworks such as Flutter and in addition, Desktop and embedded devices support. 
However, ObjectBox lacks channels to create and run custom queries other than the pre-defined query methods.

In this session, I aim to showcase ObjectBox as a simpler option to persisting data in Android applications, in form of a codelab.

We ship code for clients. To build solutions. Sometimes, we, the engineers, are lucky to be the clients and have a bit more wiggle room to build in our favorite frameworks and languages. Stay Charged: Techniques for Energy-Efficient Background Tasks in Android

When businesses tend to build products, in most cases they start with a small focal point or an MVP and expand on it with more features as the business entity grows and matures. Some of the concerns faced by these businesses when they grow in terms of technology are sometimes on scalability/ handling load or a growing userbase than anticipated, fast delivery to meet the needs of the user base and architectural concerns.

The aim of this session/exercise is to zoom out and answer those technological questions, know when to use a particular technology and why it’s been used, understand the common use cases for different technologies and compare them to know their pros and cons before implementing them in your system, and understanding when to use certain architectures to enable scalability, flexibility and timely delivery

System Design and Architecture for Android Engineers

Every android application that handles data will need to store that data at some point. Android's room database is usually a good choice for all your local data storage needs. It allows engineers to focus on what's important, building features, and not get bogged down with db related tasks.

There are times when, as an engineer, you've got multiple related tables. It can be difficult and time consuming to maintain all of these tables. In my case, I had 4 tables that stored different types of notes. The notes were quite similar with some minor differences; with generic daos I created a base entity and dao and then had all the other note entities and daos inherit from the base. I want to show android engineers how they can utilize generic daos and entities in their projects.

Once we're done they'll be able to create base daos & entites and know when to use them in a project. They'll also have learned of some of the benefits of using base daos & entities.
